Art by Lydia Sproull

Lydia Sproull creates fine art portraits, landscapes, still life, and paintings of the figure and animals in their worlds.  Commissioned portraits have been a way of connecting and expressing in a spiritual, as well as physical way, the importance of each individual person or animal, their personality, and their unique relationship to each other and their world.  Sproull’s business name, A Moment In Time Creations, describes her desire to express the spirit and blessing of the moment.  Lydia enjoys plein air painting, as observing and painting directly from life are the greatest teachers, but enjoys a more contemplative approach when painting most finished works.  Because traditional, realist art is what most clearly communicates the way in which she sees, and moves her most deeply, she incorporates old master techniques into her artworks.  The glowing colors can only be achieved by a process of layering strokes and glazing.  While this is more time consuming than direct painting the results are luminous oil paintings that shift in mood in different lighting conditions.  Because Sproull believes all important art is spiritual art, in the sense that the artist is grasping and communicating an aspect of the subject beyond its mere physical presence, it is by nature a celebration of significance.  To convey this she uses light and color purposefully to capture the mood inherent in the subject.  Recently Lydia was acquainted with the Norwegian Fjord horses.  Their combined strength and gentle natures as well as their beauty charmed her.  Some of her artwork of the last year has been of this rugged, trustworthy equine breed.  In the process she became interested in the people who had relied on these animals.  This exposure to Nordic culture has inspired the creation of her recent work, “Apples”, which pictures a young lady in her bunad bringing apples to two beautiful, gentle Fjord horses.  More paintings exploring these themes are planned.
